Freebie Friday the 13th

I'm not superstitious. I'm really not. So I don't believe that Friday the 13th is unlucky. In fact, I was born on a Friday the 13th. I'm not going to count that as unlucky.

But...

Well, if I was ever going to rethink my stance on superstition, today might have been a tipping point. I won't go into the boring details, but let's just say a lot went wrong. Including the tiny little problem that our scheduled Freebie Friday guest will not be joining us today.

But in a little twist of fate...

Since I couldn't get my act together, I decided to re-watch an old movie - "ONLY YOU" with Marisa Tomei and a young Robert Downey, Junior. (I'm currently breaking down movies after taking a workshop with Alexandra Sokoloff, and this was one of the movies I chose.) Loved, loved, loved it.

Marisa Tomei plays Faith, a hopeless romantic who believes she is destined to meet and marry a man by the name of Damon Bradley (a name spelled out on her Ouija board when she was 11.) Despite her dream that she'll find Damon, she becomes engaged to a less-than-romantic podiatrist. Shortly before the wedding, her fiance's classmate calls asking for him. The classmate is none other than Damon Bradley, who is on his way to Venice. Of course, as these movies go, Faith believes the phone call is fate, and races to the airport to meet Damon. This movie was made pre-9/11, so she's able to race right up to the gate, just in time to see Damon's plane pulling away. So - what else - she follows him to Italy. Her sister-in-law Kate (Bonnie Hunt, whom I adore) accompanies Faith to help her find Damon and realize her destiny.

Just a note - Robert Downey, Jr. speaking Italian is hot.

Memorable line, Kate's husband Larry (Fisher Stevens), upon hearing that Kate has gone to Italy: "IT-lee? What the hell is my wife doing in IT-lee?!"

This was a great movie to break down. It followed the romantic formula so well. Among the themes - very clearly stated - were, "You can't push it, you have to just let it happen." "True love is what counts" and, of course, destiny. "You make your own destiny."

So here's today's Freebie Friday question - do you believe in fate/destiny? Why or why not? Up for grabs is a movie pack - microwave popcorn, Junior Mints, and a copy of "ONLY YOU" on DVD.

Oh, and don't forget the TRANCE Countdown kickoff contest going on all this month. Enter and you could win $160 in CSN money!

Oooh good question. I think you can work towards a goal and it if it happens it's meant too. I guess that's destiny or fate. I just usually say "what's meant to be, will be" among other similar phrases.

and an Italian speaking Robert Downey. Jr? NIIIIICE.

I believe in fate/destiny up to a point. I think that there's usually a reason for meeting certain people. I'm not one of those crazy people who believes everything revolves around fate/destiny though like the Faith in Only You. But I do love that movie!

I'm not sure if I do... It's a really confusing concept to me. I do believe in true love though :)

I don't believe in fate or destiny. Every choice a person makes has a different effect...so saying that there is destiny means that choice doesn't matter, and that no matter what you will have the same ending. I just can't believe in something like that.

I don't believe in destiny or fate. I'm very much a believer in individual action.

Sounds like a cute movie. (Plus, I love Tomei and Downey, Jr.)

To a certain point, I believe in destiny/fate. Like Breanna said, I think there's a reason for things but I don't think everything revolves around fate.

I'vse never seen this movie but anything with Robert Downey Jr. is golden!

I believe strongly in fate and destiny. It is evident in many facets of our lives especially so when you meet someone with whom you know there will be a future. As my mother and grandmother said, It is beschert.

I believe in fate/destiny. I have witnessed this, seen it and felt it. Its existence is meaningful and it does exert a great deal of influence which is important and cannot be ignored.

I believe in fate/destiny to a certain extent. I think our actions and decisions can change the course of the future in an instant and even subtle changes can have great effects on our futures. I think fate tries to influence your decision from time to time, but in the end, it's still you that has to make that final decision.

For instance, my decision to do varsity fencing instead of varsity winter track in my first few years of high school has had many effects on me, even years later. True, I got my first sports-related injury and was in physical therapy for a few months, but I also met amazing people that have become my closest friends today. But two big factors that made me chose fencing over winter track was that I liked running spring track better...and it was drizzling on the first day of winter track practice. I didn't mind a bit of drizzling, but did I want to try something new, or did I want to run in the rain? Yes, fate had a hand in it, but it was my decision that sealed the deal. I think your decisions and fate work hand-in-hand sometimes to change the course of your future.

i believe in destiny, but i also believe you make your own destiny. you can't always control what happens in your life, but you can control how you react to it.
